Blog :: Child Safety Laws
By Steven Forrest
Since April 1st 2014 the new Child Safety Laws were enforced in the UK with all Window Blind products. This impact has slightly changed the way blinds are now fitted in all homes and offices.
To give you a bit more understanding on what these changes are, I shall list the products and detail what has changed.
Vertical Blinds normally had the two cords hanging freely on the end of the track at the length of the fabric. This has now changed and you have 2 options for Vertical Blinds
- You can still have a cord operated Vertical Blind but the cords has to be at least 1500mm off the floor and securely fastened to the wall with a cord tidy.
- Alternatively, you can have a Wand operated Vertical Blind. This Wand hangs with the last piece of fabric. With Split Draw blinds, you have an option of one wand that operates both sets of fabric or two wands that controls each side individually. I personally recommend Wand operated Vertical Blinds in hard to reach places such as Kitchen Windows or Windows without a recess such as Conservatories.
Roller Blinds were similar to Vertical Blinds in the way that the control chain hung freely next to the fabric, but now this has changed to. The control chain can still hang freely next to the fabric but the chain has to finish at least 600mm from the floor and has an Easy Break Connector installed. An Easy break connector is designed to break if 8 pounds or more pressure is placed on the chain. A chain tidy can be installed to give that added security.
Pleated blinds and Venetian Blinds can be made child safe :
- A cleat has to be installed on the wall 1500mm from the floor so that the cord can be wrapped around the cleat when the blind fully up.
- Pleated Blinds only - Have a tensioned pleated blind installed. No cords are needed to operate the blind as the blind is tensioned to the window.
These new Child Safety Laws has to be enforced on every job without exception.
